  • What does the spine do?

What is a slipped disc?

  • A slipped disc, also known as a herniated disc or prolapsed intervertebral disc, occurs when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc pushes through its tougher outer layer. This can irritate or compress nearby spinal nerves, leading to pain and other symptoms.
  • Despite the name, the disc does not actually "slip" out of place. Instead, it bulges or herniates due to age-related wear and tear or injury.

What is cervical spondylosis?

  • Cervical spondylosis refers to age-related wear and tear of the bones, discs and joints of the neck (cervical spine). It is a very common condition and becomes more frequent as people grow older.

What is cervical radiculopathy?

  • Cervical radiculopathy occurs when one of the nerves leaving the cervical spine becomes compressed or irritated.

Symptoms usually affect one arm and may include:

What is the difference between ACDF and Cervical Disc Replacement?

  • Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF)
  • In ACDF, the damaged disc is removed through a small incision in the front of the neck. A bone graft or cage is inserted, and the two vertebrae are fused together using a plate and screws when required.
  • Cervical Disc Replacement (Artificial Disc Replacement)
  • In Cervical Disc Replacement, the diseased disc is removed and replaced with an artificial disc designed to preserve motion at that spinal level.
  • The choice between these procedures depends on several factors, including your age, spinal condition, number of affected levels, spinal alignment and the health of your facet joints. Your spine surgeon will recommend the most appropriate option after a thorough evaluation.

What is Microscopic Cervical Foraminotomy?

  • Microscopic Cervical Foraminotomy is a motion-preserving minimally invasive procedure performed through a small incision at the back of the neck.
  • Instead of removing the entire disc, the surgeon enlarges the opening (foramen) through which the nerve exits the spine and removes only the portion of disc or bone compressing the nerve.
  • This procedure is suitable for carefully selected patients with cervical radiculopathy caused by nerve root compression, particularly when the spinal alignment is normal and spinal instability is absent.
