What Is It?

  • A Spinal Infection is an infection involving the bones (vertebrae), intervertebral discs or surrounding tissues of the spine. These infections may be caused by bacteria, fungi or, less commonly, other microorganisms.
  • Depending on the location of infection, spinal infections may be referred to as:
  • Spondylitis (infection of the vertebrae)
  • Discitis (infection of the intervertebral disc)
  • Spondylodiscitis (infection involving both the vertebrae and disc)
  • Epidural Abscess (collection of pus around the spinal cord)
